Text: 2Samuel 11vs 14-15,” In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab and sent it with Uriah.15 In it he wrote, “Put Uriah out in front where the fighting is fiercest. Then withdraw from him so he will be struck down and die.”
Mission field is one of the most dangerous and hottest places of battle. It is where the habitation of the cruelty or wicked are located (Ps 74 vs 20). Mission field is the dark place of the world. It is where wickedness and oppression of the devil becomes more real. It is a place you see gross darkness and thick darkness in reality. It is a place where Satan seat is mostly located because it is evaded or ruled by his darkness and the Bible says,” … for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of the cruelty”. Mission field is a habitation of the cruelty.
Whenever a missionary is then sent to this dark place of the world, that missionary then needs our unfailing support, both in prayer, cash and kind. There are places where we can never go but you will find a missionary there. There was a story of two missionaries couple who were committed and addicted soul winners. They went to Leper colony one day and solicited they go in there to preach but the keeper of the gate declined and said,” no one goes in and come out again”. But in the fulfillment of the Great Commission, the missionaries persisted and they said, the gospel must be preached to everyone, nation, kingdom then an end shall come. They say,” how shall they hear the gospel of Jesus except they preach”. That was how those missionaries jeopardized their lives for the sake of the gospel.
Missionaries dare and risk their lives for gospel’s sake. Many of them have denied the present enjoyment because of eternity of others. But don’t we think it is highest form of wickedness to send these ones to where most of us cannot go and yet forget them and withdraw our support.
Many senders are like David these days who sent his faithful servant Uriah on the field and withdraw the support that supposed to be given to him. Whenever we withdraw our support from missionary, we are like David who for his own personal gain or profit exposed his devoted and loyal servant to untimely death.
It is unfortunately that many great mission works had ended and collapsed because the sender or sending church withdrew their supports. Many missionaries had lost their lives due to this salient issue of support withdrawal.
You will wonder that how could a man who wrote the 23rd chapter of Psalms do this evil thing? You also may wonder that how can you who preach holiness and soul winning could do the same? It is sinful and callous to see our sending church captured in this way. I believe the Holy Spirit intention for us here to see not the terrible sin committed by David, but also the way we commit our sins also by withdrawing support from our dedicated, loyal and committed missionaries.
Do not forget every hidden thing shall be made known unto the Lord. No man’s hidden sins or wickedness shall not be uncovered. Even it seems to me that Joab represents the coordinators who later discovered the wickedness of their master to waste the faithful Uriah.
Uriah died serving his king faithfully. He never knew that the king had impregnated his wife and had in fact, ordered his own death, but God knew.
Many missionaries had died serving faithfully never knowing that the sending church had redirected funds and support meant for them to survive on the field, but God knew.
I appeal to you today, do not withdraw your support so that you will not be representing David in the life of the faithful Uriah (the Missionary).
